Telehealth, built under pressure
When the pandemic hit, a medical group needed to see patients over video — fast. I designed and built the video-visit platform on AWS so providers could keep caring for patients remotely.

A real-time social video app with live face-tracking and interactive effects: computer vision running right in the browser with TensorFlow.js. I have been shipping practical ML in web products for years, not months.

An e-commerce and hosting business needed to manage a large, fast-moving catalog. I built the secure cart, automated billing, and a static-site generator that kept 10,000+ products fast and easy to manage.

The name is a nod to the craft: good software gets forged, not conjured. Shaped deliberately, tested under heat, made to last. Here is what that means in practice.

About David
I have been building software professionally since 1997 and contracting independently since 2001. Web and mobile apps, cloud infrastructure, even game engines. For the last several years my focus has been AI and machine learning. Not the buzzwords: hands-on work with large language models, knowledge graphs, and neuro-symbolic systems, including an app framework and a knowledge graph I am building myself right now.
I have a long academic grounding in the field too: machine learning, cognitive systems, computational thinking. I try to stay on the humane, plain-spoken side of it, and build technology in service of people.
I work with a couple of clients at a time, which keeps the attention where it should be. Detailed CV available on request.

What kinds of projects do you take on?
Custom web and mobile applications, cloud and serverless infrastructure, integrations between tools you already use, and technical strategy when you are deciding what to build. If it is software and it needs to work reliably, it is probably a fit.
Do you work with small businesses and non-technical founders?
Yes, that is most of my work. You do not need to speak fluent engineering. I translate between the business goal and the technical work, and keep you in plain language the whole way.
How do engagements usually work?
We start with a short, no-pressure conversation about the problem. From there it is typically a fixed-scope project for well-defined work, or an ongoing arrangement for evolving needs. Either way you get a clear picture of scope, timeline, and cost before we begin.
I already have a system or a developer — can you still help?
Often, yes. I can pick up an existing codebase, shore up something fragile, add capacity to an in-house team, or give you an independent second opinion on architecture or direction.
Do you offer ongoing support after launch?
Yes. Software is not "done" at launch. I can stay on for maintenance, monitoring, and improvements, or hand off cleanly to your team with the documentation to run it. Your call.
